Moon Phase Soulmate Calculator
Enter two birth dates and the moon phase soulmate calculator reads the Moon's illumination on each one, names both birth moon phases, and shows which of the 36 possible pairings you and your partner make.
The result names both birth moon phases, gives the illuminated percentage of the Moon on each birth date, states which of the 5 compatibility categories the two phases form and how many degrees apart they sit on the wheel, and links to the full write-up for that pair.
What a moon phase soulmate is
A moon phase soulmate is someone whose birth moon phase sits in a notable position relative to yours on the eight-phase lunation wheel. Your birth moon phase is simply how much of the Moon was lit on the day you were born, measured as the angle between the Moon and the Sun.
Two arrangements get most of the attention. Opposite phases, such as a New Moon person with a Full Moon person, produce two images that complete a circle when placed side by side. Identical phases produce two people who move through situations the same way. The remaining pairings sit between those poles, and each of the 36 combinations has its own reading.
Moon phase compatibility describes tempo and instinct rather than fate. Nothing in the framework claims a pairing is required, ruled out, or predictive of how a relationship ends. The same readings apply to people you are not dating, which is what the guide to phase compatibility with friends and family covers.
How moon phase matching works
Matching runs on distance, not similarity. The 8 phases sit 45 degrees apart around one lunar cycle, so any two birth moons are separated by 0, 45, 90, 135 or 180 degrees, and that separation is what the pairing is named after. The wheel below shows all 5 separations measured from the New Moon, and the cards under it say what each one describes.
The lunation wheel. Eight phases sit 45 degrees apart, so any two birth moons are 0, 45, 90, 135 or 180 degrees apart. Those 5 separations are the only ones an 8-point wheel can produce, which is why there are 5 compatibility categories and not 6.
-
Conjunct
0° apart, 0 phase steps
Both people were born under the same phase, so they meet the world with the same instinct and the same blind spot.
-
Sextile
45° apart, 1 phase step
One phase apart. Each person is standing at the step of the cycle the other has just left or is about to reach.
-
Square
90° apart, 2 phase steps
Two phases apart, a quarter of the lunation. The pair works at different speeds and usually argues about timing rather than substance.
-
Trine
135° apart, 3 phase steps
Three phases apart. Far enough that neither person duplicates the other, close enough that the difference reads as range rather than conflict.
-
Opposite
180° apart, 4 phase steps
Directly across the wheel. One is filling as the other empties, which is the classic attraction-and-friction pairing.
A worked example: a birth date of 12 June 1994 gives a Waxing Crescent at 9.7% illumination, and 3 November 1990 gives a Full Moon at 99.5%. Those phases are 3 steps apart on the wheel, which makes the pairing a trine at 135 degrees. Three phases apart. Far enough that neither person duplicates the other, close enough that the difference reads as range rather than conflict. Read that pairing in full.
Complementary is the word the framework uses for phases that cover different parts of the cycle, and matching for phases that cover the same part. Both descriptions come from illumination alone, which is what separates this from synastry proper, where a full birth chart compares planets rather than a single lunar measurement. For what the separations are taken to say about a partnership, see what moon phases are said to mean in relationships .
The eight moon phases
Each phase covers a 45-degree slice of the lunation and carries its own reading. Open any one for its full description, its illumination band and the pairings it forms.
Twin flame moon phases are a different claim
Soulmate framing treats two people as well-matched companions, so every phase pairing gets a reading and none is disqualifying. Twin flame framing treats two people as halves of one self, which narrows the interesting cases to exact opposites and exact matches. The calculation is identical; the interpretation attached to the result is not.

Two people born a year apart can share a moon phase and have entirely different moon signs, because the 2 measurements track different things. Synastry, the branch of astrology that compares two birth charts, uses the moon sign along with every other placement. Moon phase compatibility uses 1 number. Compare phase, sign and full birth chart side by side.
How this is calculated
The moon phase half of this page is astronomy. Lunar longitude comes from the truncated ELP-2000/82 series published as Table 47.A in Jean Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms, and solar longitude from chapter 25 of the same book. Subtracting one from the other gives the elongation, and the illumination percentage follows directly from it.
That approach is used instead of counting 29.53 days forward from a single reference new moon, because real lunations run anywhere from about 29.27 to 29.83 days. A fixed synodic month drifts far enough over a few decades to name the wrong phase, which is the usual reason two moon phase calculators disagree about the same birthday.
The compatibility half is astrology. The eight phase personalities follow the lunation types in Dane Rudhyar's The Lunation Cycle (1967). No study shows that the moon phase on a person's birth date affects their personality or their relationships, and nothing on this page should be read as a scientific finding about either.

Basics
What is a moon phase soulmate?
A moon phase soulmate is a person whose birth moon phase forms a notable relationship with yours on the eight-phase lunation wheel, most often the phase directly opposite yours or the same phase as yours. The idea comes from lunation-cycle astrology rather than from astronomy: the moon phase itself is a measurable fact, while the soulmate reading applied to it is an interpretive framework.
How does a moon phase soulmate calculator work?
The calculator converts each birth date into the Moon-Sun elongation for that date, which gives the illuminated fraction of the lunar disc and the named phase it falls under. It then measures how far apart the two phases sit on the eight-point wheel and returns the pairing that matches that separation. No birth time, birthplace or personal data is needed, and the calculation runs in your browser.
What are the 8 phases of the moon?
In order through one lunation: New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter and Waning Crescent. New and Full sit at 0 and 180 degrees of elongation, the two quarters at 90 and 270, and the four crescent and gibbous phases fill the 45-degree spans between them.
Matching & results
Do soulmates need matching moon phases?
No. In lunation-cycle astrology the two combinations that get singled out are opposite phases, such as New Moon with Full Moon, and identical phases, but every one of the 36 possible pairings has a reading. Matching phases describe shared instincts, opposite phases describe complementary ones, and neither arrangement is treated as a requirement for a relationship.
What if my partner and I have the same moon phase?
Sharing a phase is called a conjunct pairing, and it means you both approach situations with the same instinct and the same blind spot. The upside is that little explanation is needed between you. The downside is that neither partner naturally supplies what the other is missing, so same-phase couples tend to need outside input more than mixed pairings do.
What if our moon phases don't match at all?
Phases two steps apart on the wheel form a square, which is the pairing most often described as a mismatch. A square usually shows up as a disagreement about pace and timing rather than about direction or values. The compatibility chart gives a specific reading for each of these combinations instead of scoring them as a failure.
Can I use this to check compatibility with a friend, not a partner?
Yes. The calculator compares two birth dates and has no idea what the relationship between them is, so friends, siblings, co-founders and colleagues all work the same way. The pairing readings describe working tempo and communication style, which apply outside romantic contexts without any adjustment.
Astrology vs. science
Is moon phase compatibility scientifically proven?
No. There is no scientific evidence that the moon phase on a person’s birth date affects their personality or their relationships. The lunar calculation on this page is real astronomy, and the compatibility interpretation layered on top of it is astrology, which is not a scientific claim and should not be treated as one.
Is the moon phase soulmate test based on real astrology?
Yes, in the sense that it draws on an established astrological framework rather than an invented one. The eight lunation types used here come from Dane Rudhyar’s "The Lunation Cycle", published in 1967, which is the source most modern moon-phase personality material traces back to.
What's the difference between moon phase compatibility and moon sign compatibility?
Moon phase is the angle between the Moon and the Sun on your birth date, which determines how much of the Moon was lit. Moon sign is the zodiac constellation the Moon occupied, which changes roughly every two and a half days and usually needs a birth time to pin down. They are different measurements, and two people can share a moon phase while having different moon signs.
Accuracy & origins
Do I need my exact birth time for this calculator?
No. The Moon’s illumination changes by under 12 percentage points over a single day, so a birth date alone puts you firmly inside one named phase on almost every date. The exception is a birth within a few hours of an exact new, quarter or full moon, where the named phase can change during the day. This calculator reads each date at noon UTC.
Why do different moon phase calculators sometimes show different results?
Three things account for nearly all the disagreements: the time of day assumed for a date without a birth time, the time zone the date is read in, and where a calculator draws its phase boundaries. Some tools use a fixed 29.53-day cycle counted from a single reference new moon, which drifts by a day or more over a few decades because real lunations vary in length.
How accurate is this calculator's moon phase data?
Lunar longitude is computed from the truncated ELP-2000/82 series given in chapter 47 of Jean Meeus’s "Astronomical Algorithms", and solar longitude from chapter 25 of the same book. That puts the illuminated fraction within 0.3 percentage points of a full ephemeris, which is far tighter than the 45-degree width of a named phase.
Where does the moon phase soulmate trend come from?
The current version spread through short-form video, where people overlaid two birth-date moon phases and looked for the images to complete a full circle. The underlying astrological idea is much older and comes from lunation-cycle work published in the 1960s. The viral format added the visual test; it did not invent the framework.
